WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University is taking a significant lead in research, hitting a remarkable $931.5 million in research expenditures for the fiscal year 2024. This sum is the highest among all universities in Indiana, both public and private.
Dan DeLaurentis, Purdue’s executive vice president for research, commented, “Research and development are vital to Purdue’s reputation as a top-tier university. Our collaborations with industry and government funding drive innovation and workforce development in science and engineering.”
Purdue has notably climbed to No. 5 among universities without human medical schools, according to the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). This ranking comes from their annual Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey.
Purdue’s progress is largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students. Provost Patrick Wolfe highlighted that research spending exceeded $1 billion for the first time in history last fiscal year. He stated, “We will continue to support and prioritize high-impact research.”
The HERD survey, which measures research activities across institutions, revealed that Purdue’s expenditures grew by nearly $86 million from the previous year. Current projections show that in fiscal year 2025, the total will exceed $1 billion.
In a recent study, nearly 70% of students expressed excitement about Purdue’s investment in research, reflecting the campus community’s commitment to innovation. Social media reactions show students celebrating this achievement as they believe it enhances their learning experiences.
Purdue, a public research university known for excellence, serves over 106,000 students across various campuses. It has been ranked among the top 10 public universities in the U.S. and remains committed to affordability, freezing tuition for 14 consecutive years. Purdue continues to push boundaries through initiatives like the Mitch Daniels School of Business and the One Health initiative.
