Join the Climate Cafe: Spark Local Eco Action in Welwyn Hatfield!

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is kicking off its first climate cafe, a space designed to connect locals and spark environmental action. This event, part of the ‘Climate Hub: Chats for Change’ initiative, will be held on Wednesday, January 21, at St John’s Community Cafe in High View, Hatfield.

From 10 AM to 12 PM, residents can drop by for an easy-going chat. They’ll get tips on energy efficiency, sustainable travel, local nature enhancement, and recycling. The council will share information on ongoing climate projects and ways to get involved. Plus, there will be refreshments!

Since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, Welwyn Hatfield aims to be net zero by 2030 for the council and 2050 for the borough. A recent 2023 survey showed that many residents are worried about climate change and want to take action. Chats for Change will create a welcoming space for people to voice their concerns and share sustainable living tips. This initiative especially focuses on those who might be more vulnerable to climate impacts, like the elderly or those with health issues.

Councillor Max Holloway, Leader of the Council, emphasizes the importance of community input. He noted that residents often have valuable insights on how to protect their environment. “Bringing people together over a cup of tea can lead to great ideas for tackling the climate emergency,” he said.

According to a 2023 report by the UK Government, public interest in climate initiatives has grown significantly, with over 70% of citizens wanting to contribute to environmental protection. This trend reflects a shift toward collective responsibility and community-driven solutions.
