The Nigerian government recently praised the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for its help in addressing the country’s environmental issues. This acknowledgment came during a workshop in Abuja focused on improving project oversight for GEF initiatives.
Malam Balarabe Lawal, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, highlighted GEF as a key partner in combating environmental challenges. According to Lawal, these challenges range from desertification in the north to plastic pollution affecting cities and waterways. Additionally, biodiversity loss and oil contamination in the Niger Delta add to the urgent need for action.
This partnership has led to valuable outcomes. GEF projects have helped conserve over 500 indigenous plant species and promoted sustainable forest management. They also work on climate change mitigation through renewable energy initiatives and sustainable land-use practices, which greatly support Nigeria’s climate goals. Lawal emphasized that while financial support is crucial, successful project implementation requires strong institutional capacity and oversight.
Mr. Mahmud Kambari, the Permanent Secretary of the Environment Ministry, echoed this message. He noted that Nigeria’s long-standing relationship with GEF has led to significant improvements in biodiversity conservation, land degradation control, and waste reduction.
GEF’s efforts resonate beyond Nigeria. Dr. Michael David, Executive Director of the Global Initiative for Food, Security and Ecosystem Preservation, mentioned that GEF is actively supporting over 144 countries. He highlighted the need for strong project oversight, noting that successful training programs are underway in multiple African countries.

With increasing awareness of climate change, public support and participation are growing.
