On January 13, the Qatar Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, unveiled the 2025 State of the Environment Report. This report shines a spotlight on Qatar’s current environmental conditions, outlining both challenges and achievements while charting priorities for the future.
The report employs a thorough assessment methodology that looks at environmental, economic, and social dynamics. It discusses governance and sustainable development, pinpointing key factors that affect the environment and the pressures it faces. This work supports integrated environmental planning, making it easier for various sectors to engage in sustainability efforts.
Dr. Al Subaie emphasized the report’s refreshing commitment to transparency in environmental data. He believes it will boost public awareness and encourage broader participation in meeting Sustainable Development Goals.
He noted that the report is a vital resource for decision-makers. By offering data-driven insights, it helps shape effective environmental policies. This aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, underlining the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development.
The report reflects the collaboration of around 80 experts, researchers, and specialists over the past year. It provides a systemic overview of environmental data and indicators, facilitating a better grasp of changes from 2021 to 2024.
Eng. Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Undersecretary for the Ministry, shared that the report standardizes frameworks among various departments. It links results to ongoing programs, optimizing monitoring and accountability.
Eng. Hussein Saad Al Kubaisi, who led the report’s preparation, mentioned it builds on findings from the 2021 report. It presents updated data on environmental aspects like biodiversity, air quality, marine health, water resources, and waste management.
Notably, the report was compiled in partnership with Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar University, and Earthna Center, following the United Nations Environment Programme’s guidelines on Environmental Impact Assessment. A workshop last September gathered 25 departments from 13 national entities to ensure broad stakeholder participation.
