Safaricom Achieves Prestigious CDP ‘A-List’ Recognition: A Leader in Climate Action and Net-Zero Goals

Safaricom PLC has made waves in environmental responsibility by landing a spot on CDP’s “A-List” for climate transparency. It’s a big deal—only 4% of companies worldwide earned this recognition in 2025. Their emphasis on transparency allows organizations to better measure and manage their environmental impact.

According to Safaricom’s 2025 Sustainable Business Report, advancements in digital technology have sharpened their ability to track emissions. New tools for managing greenhouse gas data and AI dashboards provide clearer insights, which are crucial for reporting.

Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom’s CEO, mentioned that the company follows strict guidelines for climate reporting, including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). With an internal carbon pricing mechanism and the planting of over 2.3 million trees, they’re actively working to offset their emissions. Their goal? Achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As part of its strategy, Safaricom is transitioning to renewable energy. By 2030, they aim for 95% of their network to be powered by green energy and expect to run 5,000 sites on solar power. They also plan to plant 5 million trees over 5,000 hectares while shifting their supply chain to more eco-friendly partners.

A recent survey revealed that consumers are increasingly supportive of companies taking environmental action, with 78% willing to pay more for sustainable products. This trend highlights the growing importance of corporate responsibility in today’s market.

Social media reactions show a surge in appreciation for Safaricom’s initiatives. Many users express pride and hope, sharing messages that support the company’s mission. As the public becomes more environmentally conscious, companies like Safaricom are proving that a commitment to sustainability can resonate deeply with consumers.

Safaricom is not just focused on numbers; they aim to create a positive impact on communities and drive innovation. This latest recognition is a step toward becoming a leader in purpose-driven technology in Africa, showing that environmental care and business can go hand in hand.
