Bill Courtney, a beloved figure in college basketball, has passed away at 55. The Temple University basketball program announced the news, describing his death as sudden.
Temple’s coach, Adam Fisher, expressed deep sorrow, noting, “I am heartbroken by the loss of my close friend. Bill made a significant impact in a short time with us. He was a respected coach—thoughtful, prepared, and dedicated to winning the right way.” Fisher emphasized the importance of Courtney’s influence on every program he was part of.
Courtney joined Temple in June 2025, bringing over three decades of coaching experience. Previously, he had a successful five-season run at Miami, where his team reached the NCAA tournament three times, including a Final Four appearance in 2023. He stepped into the role of interim coach for Miami last season after Jim Larrañaga retired.
Arthur Johnson, Temple’s athletic director, also shared his grief. “In his brief time here, Bill radiated joy on and off the court. His absence will be profoundly felt by everyone in the basketball community.”
Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Courtney was a standout player at Bucknell. He graduated in 1992 with a degree in education and earned All-Patriot League honors. His coaching journey included tenures at various universities, including American, Bowling Green, and DePaul, as well as a six-year stint at Cornell.
Tim Pernetti, commissioner of the American Conference, highlighted Courtney’s lasting impact. “While he led teams to postseason success, it’s the positive influence he had on student-athletes and fellow coaches that will define his legacy,” Pernetti said.
