The Voorhees-Gibbsboro Lions Club is shining a light on food insecurity, an issue that stretches far beyond the holiday season. While many focus on it during Hunger Awareness Week, the need for support continues all year round.
This initiative, organized by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, typically includes food drives and community outreach right before Thanksgiving. Yet, the Lions Club recognized the gap in support during the quieter months. “Hunger doesn’t end after the holidays,” said Mimi Hadi, secretary and founder of the Lions Club. “That’s why we’re running a food drive this January.”
Currently, the Lions Club is collecting donations of non-perishable food and essential hygiene products at four locations: Voorhees Town Center, Sanremo Pizzeria and Ristorante in Gibbsboro, the Indian Cultural Center in Marlton, and Oaks Integrated Care in Berlin. Even after their official drive wraps up, people can still contribute by contacting the club at voorheesgibbsborolionsclub@gmail.com.
All items collected will go to the Hope Food Pantry, helping families throughout South Jersey. The items in high demand include canned soup, breakfast bars, and hygiene products like soap and toothpaste. However, expired or opened items can’t be accepted.
Hadi emphasized the vital role of community involvement. “The support from our community is what makes this drive a success,” she explained. Beyond just donations, the Lions Club is encouraging residents to engage with other local organizations that also help fight hunger.
Globally, about one billion people face hunger, with one in nine households struggling to access food in certain areas. Hadi pointed out that addressing hunger requires more than just statistics; it demands empathy and understanding of its real-life impact. “It’s easy to overlook if you haven’t experienced it,” she remarked.
