Construction is underway on a solar park designed to power electric bin lorries in and around Cambridge. This new project will generate 1 megawatt of solar energy, significantly cutting carbon emissions from waste collections.
The solar scheme is a collaborative effort between Cambridge City Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council, and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, costing around £6 million. It will support 36 electric vehicle (EV) charging points at the Waterbeach depot, servicing bin lorries for both councils.
Currently, there are four electric bin lorries in operation, but the authorities noted they lack the capacity to power more. The goal is to have a total of 18 electric lorries by 2027. Interestingly, this project is expected to cover about 60% of the depot’s total energy needs.
