Last week in Nashville, I met a guy named Mike. He was camping next to us. Over a couple of days, we chatted and shared stories, just like neighbors used to do before the world got so busy.
One thing Mike said really stuck with me: “I’ve never met disgruntled people in a campground.” I paused to think about that. In my experience, I’ve met plenty of unhappy folks elsewhere, but not in campgrounds.
Here we are right now at the Florida RV SuperShow in Tampa. If there’s a place to test Mike’s theory, this is it. The campground is crowded, packed so tight that you can hardly move without bumping into neighbors. Despite this, we haven’t heard a single complaint.
Just last night, it got down to 47 degrees. Not exactly the cozy weather you expect in Florida! Still, almost everyone was out, visiting each other late into the night. Total strangers quickly became friends, sharing laughter and stories.
Statistically, there must be some unhappy campers around. But so far, we haven’t seen them. Everyone here seems resilient, turning inconveniences into opportunities. People embrace the challenges of close quarters, enjoying the chance to connect instead of retreating behind privacy barriers.
So where do the negative folks go? Maybe they’re at home, grumbling while scrolling through social media, or writing bad reviews about things that don’t matter. Meanwhile, those of us in campgrounds are soaking up the joy and adventure.
What’s fascinating is that RVing often attracts a certain mindset. We face breakdowns or bad weather, just like anyone else. But many of us choose to look at these bumps in the road as memories in the making rather than problems.
Camping is about community. When things go wrong, we come together. If the campground isn’t perfect, well, that makes for a good story later. Mike was right – in campgrounds, it’s all about choosing happiness.
Each day brings a decision. We can choose to see the good. Our neighbors might be too close, but that means we can borrow tools. Bad weather? Perfect time to cozy up with a book. Life isn’t always easy, but we have something special: the ability to adapt and find joy in the simplest moments.
There’s a quiet understanding among campers—a shared agreement to seek happiness. It’s not about ignoring real issues but about choosing a positive spin when faced with choices. So while the disgruntled might be missing out, we’re here, enjoying every moment, whether we’re freezing or roasting, breaking down or making new connections.
In the end, camping isn’t just about the location; it’s about the mindset. And in our little RV community, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
