George Mason’s Winning Streak Continues
George Mason University’s women’s basketball team is on fire. They achieved a significant milestone on January 14, 2023, securing a gritty 59-54 victory over Loyola University Chicago. This win marks their perfect 6-0 run in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the best start in the program’s history.
The Patriots kicked off the game with energy. Zahirah Walton made an impactful three-point play early on, setting a positive tone. Louis Volker followed up with another three-pointer, quickly giving them an 8-0 lead. By the end of the first quarter, George Mason was ahead 14-9, thanks to Jada Brown’s contributions, which included a well-placed jumper.
In the second quarter, the momentum didn’t fade. Page Greenburg hit a crucial three-pointer, expanding their lead. Walton continued to shine, adding key layups. Despite Loyola trying to catch up, George Mason’s defense remained tough, forcing six turnovers and edging Loyola 15-14 in that quarter. The Patriots went into halftime with a 29-23 advantage.
The third quarter was marked by George Mason’s strong plays. Kennedy Harris opened the scoring with a three-pointer, leading to a series of successful fastbreaks and free throws by Walton. Though Loyola managed a few three-pointers, the Patriots held their ground, closing the quarter at 46-37.
The final quarter saw Harris once again find the basket from long range, solidifying their lead. Walton kept scoring as the Patriots built a comfortable gap. Although Loyola tried to rally with a late run, George Mason maintained their composure. Key free throws from Mary Amoateng in the final seconds secured the win.
