Junagadh: Sanjay Bangar, a former Indian cricket star and coach, recently visited Junagadh in Gujarat. He spent time talking with young cricketers, encouraging them to hone their skills and highlighting the potential of players from the Saurashtra region to join the national team.
Bangar, who is currently part of the commentary team for the ODI series between India and New Zealand in Rajkot, praised the emerging talent in Saurashtra. He mentioned how several local players have shone in tournaments like the IPL. His comments echo a broader trend; players from this area, such as Ravindra Jadeja and Cheteshwar Pujara, have made significant contributions to Indian cricket.
Interestingly, Saurashtra’s cricket scene has evolved over the years. In the past, the region had limited representation at the national level. But now, it is becoming a stronghold for cricketing talent. According to a recent survey by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), regions like Saurashtra are producing more players who consistently perform well in domestic and international matches.
Bangar’s own journey began in the small village of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. He played 12 Test matches and 15 One Day Internationals for India. After retirement, he transitioned into coaching, serving various roles, including batting coach for the Indian team and the head coach for franchises like Kings XI Punjab. His deep experience gives him unique insights, making him a valued figure in contemporary cricket.
During his visit, Bangar shared stories of his own experiences in cricket—both highs and lows. He emphasized the importance of resilience and continuous learning for young players.
