Four astronauts have successfully returned to Earth after the first medical evacuation from the International Space Station (ISS). A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule landed in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego early on January 15, 2026. This marked a significant moment in space history.
The astronauts—NASA’s Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, Japan’s Kimiya Yui, and Russia’s Oleg Platonov—were scheduled to stay in space for a month longer. However, an unexpected medical issue with one crew member led to this early return. NASA hasn’t disclosed specific details about the astronaut’s health but assured that the situation was stable and not a crisis.
On January 7, NASA had canceled a spacewalk for Cardman and Fincke, hinting at a medical concern. The following day, the agency decided to truncate the Crew-11 mission to ensure the astronaut received proper care, which wasn’t fully available onboard the ISS. Jared Isaacman, NASA Administrator, highlighted that this was not an emergency but a precautionary measure, as the medical facilities on the ISS couldn’t address the astronaut’s needs adequately.
The Crew-11 mission lasted 167 days, with the astronauts spending 165 of those aboard the ISS.
