New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently celebrated a decade of the Startup India mission. During the event at Bharat Mandapam, he recognized the hard work of Indian entrepreneurs and how they’ve reshaped the country’s image globally.
“India’s youth are tackling real problems,” Modi stated. He emphasized that startups are key players in building a self-reliant economy. Over the past ten years, the Startup India mission has sparked a major change, making India the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem.
Just ten years ago, India had less than 500 startups. Now, that number has skyrocketed to over 200,000. In 2014, there were only four unicorns—companies valued at over $1 billion—but now India boasts more than 125. This impressive rise has caught the world’s attention.
These startups are diverse, working in fields like deep tech, agritech, and artificial intelligence. Many have reached unicorn status, while others are launching IPOs and creating many jobs.
Modi reflected on how, a decade ago, there were limited opportunities for innovation. “We challenged those circumstances with Startup India, giving youth the freedom to dream,” he explained. This initiative has provided hope not just in big cities but also in tier-2 and tier-3 towns and villages.
Women play a crucial role in this growth. According to Modi, about 45% of recognized startups have at least one woman director or partner. India is now a leader in funding for women-led startups.
In recent years, there’s been a shift in focus. While digital startups thrived, Modi urged a greater emphasis on manufacturing. “We need to create high-quality products and think of unique technological ideas. The future depends on this,” he said, assuring the youth that the government supports their endeavors.
The transformation of India’s startup landscape has not just been about numbers; it’s also about dreams coming to life. As society increasingly values innovation, the youth’s ability to forge their paths promises an exciting future for the nation.
