This week, the Government of Canada announced a significant investment of $9.47 million to enhance Rouge Beach and Marsh in Rouge National Urban Park. This park is unique—it’s Canada’s first national urban park and is just an hour’s drive from one-fifth of the country’s population. It’s easily accessible by public transport, making it a perfect spot for people to connect with nature.
Rouge National Urban Park boasts a rich landscape with forests, rivers, and even a beach along Lake Ontario. It’s a place steeped in over 10,000 years of history and home to diverse wildlife. Julie Dabrusin, the Minister of the Environment, emphasized the project’s goal: “We want nature to thrive next to our cities. This investment will enhance habitats and visitor experiences.”
The renovation plan includes a 2.3-kilometre accessible trail connecting Rouge Beach to the Mast Trail, ecological restoration of the marsh, improved parking facilities, and measures to combat shoreline erosion. Elevated boardwalks will ensure safer access while protecting delicate wetlands.
Rouge National Urban Park spans more than 79 square kilometers, making it one of the largest parks in North America. It supports over 2,000 species of plants and animals and is a critical area for conservation.
This project reflects Parks Canada’s commitment to preserving nature and enriching community connections. With recent construction on a new visitor and community center, these improvements will not only protect the park’s ecosystem but also create welcoming spaces for everyone.
