Empowering a Self-Reliant India: Indian Army’s Game-Changing Procurement Contract Under iDEX

New Delhi, January 16 (ANI) – The Indian Army is taking a significant step in defense technology by signing a procurement contract for a Fire Fighting Robot. This partnership with M/s Swadeshi Empresa Pvt Ltd was finalized at the Army’s Capability Development Directorate on January 13, 2026.

This robot, developed under the Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX) program designed for the Navy, is being acquired for the first time by the Army. The iDEX scheme aims to enhance the defense startup ecosystem and promote joint development across military services.

The Fire Fighting Robot is a compact unmanned vehicle meant for dangerous firefighting situations where human intervention would be risky. With this technology, Army firefighters can carry out operations safely from a distance during emergencies.

iDEX has become an important link between the Armed Forces and innovative startups in India. This initiative has made significant strides, with nearly 22 iDEX projects moving toward trials following prototype development.

In a related advancement, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Viasat, Inc. have teamed up to upgrade the Indian Navy’s satellite communication (SATCOM) capabilities. This move will shift the Navy’s strategy to a multi-band and multi-constellation approach. The upgrade will leverage BSNL’s Gateway Earth Station alongside Viasat’s global satellite network.

Todd McDonell, Viasat’s President of International Government, emphasized that this upgrade combines the resilience of existing communication systems with new high-capacity satellite options. This partnership aims to provide stronger and safer connectivity for critical naval operations.

In India, Viasat already offers various satellite services, including disaster response and vessel tracking. This ongoing support highlights the firm’s commitment to enhancing India’s defense communication capabilities.

As these initiatives unfold, they not only strengthen the Army and Navy but also illustrate India’s growing focus on innovation in defense. The collaboration between government and startups is set to redefine the landscape of military technology.
