Matt Damon and Ben Affleck recently joined the “Joe Rogan Experience” to chat about their new Netflix film, “The Rip.” The friends shared insights on how streaming services are changing filmmaking.
Damon noted that watching a movie at home is very different from being in a theater. This shift encourages Netflix to change their approach. For instance, they want exciting action sequences at the beginning of the movie to grab viewers’ attention. Damon also mentioned that scripts often repeat key plot points to keep viewers engaged, especially since many people are on their phones while watching.
Traditionally, action films have three big moments—one in each act—with the final sequence being the most elaborate. Damon explained, “Now, they want a major action scene in the first five minutes. It’s a way to keep viewers hooked.”
Affleck added that while Netflix has a formula for success, it’s not the only way to make a great show. He highlighted the series “Adolescence,” which defies these conventional methods. “It’s dark and intense,” he said. “It focuses on a father whose child is accused of murder. There are moments of silence that speak volumes.”
Damon acknowledged that “Adolescence” is more of an outlier, but Affleck emphasized that it proves you don’t need to rely on the usual streaming tricks to win over audiences.
As streaming continues to rise, industry trends show an increasing demand for captivating content. According to recent statistics from a Pew Research survey, 69% of Americans now use streaming services, reflecting a major shift in how we consume entertainment.
This evolution in filmmaking not only changes how stories are told but also how viewers engage with them. Whether through high-octane action or quiet, meaningful moments, the future of cinema is adapting to meet new expectations.
