Washington — DHS Secretary Kristi Noem defended the Trump administration’s immigration actions in Minnesota, stating a recent federal judge’s order limiting how federal agents can operate “didn’t change anything.” She emphasized that law enforcement is committed to protecting the public and enforcing the law, a charge from President Trump.
A federal judge recently restricted the use of pepper spray and nonlethal munitions on peaceful protesters and prohibited agents from stopping drivers without reasonable suspicion. Noem described the ruling as “a little ridiculous,” claiming that agents only use such measures to maintain order during violent situations.
In recent weeks, thousands of federal agents have been sent to Minneapolis for immigration enforcement and fraud investigations, facing criticism for their tough tactics. Noem attributed violent incidents to protesters and local leaders, citing a case where a family was tear-gassed while driving home from basketball practice. She argued they wouldn’t have been caught up if the protests had remained peaceful.
The scrutiny on the administration increased after the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis. Last week, Senate Democrats urged the GOP to bring Noem and White House border czar Tom Homan to testify about the incident. Noem claimed that Good posed a threat to law enforcement and described the shooting as a tragedy, asserting that the officer acted in self-defense.
In light of Good’s shooting, a CBS News poll revealed that 54% of Americans view the shooting as unjustified. Opinions were divided, with most Republicans justifying it while Democrats and independents disagreed. Furthermore, 61% of Americans feel that ICE’s operations in detaining individuals are too harsh, a rise from 56% just a few months earlier.
This situation reflects a growing strain between law enforcement and community relations, echoing historical tensions seen in past protests.
