Unveiling the Secrets: Rare Footage of ZeniMax’s Canceled Project Blackbird Emerges Online

Two minutes of in-engine footage from ZeniMax Online Studio’s canceled Project Blackbird has recently leaked. This clip, confirmed as authentic by Insider Gaming, was created to demonstrate the game’s lighting using Unreal Engine 4.

The footage has sparked excitement among fans who were looking forward to the MMO, which was scrapped in July 2025 as part of Microsoft’s significant layoffs. These layoffs also led to the cancellation of other projects within the company.

Originally, Project Blackbird aimed for a 2028 release. Just months before its cancellation, it had impressed Microsoft Gaming executives during a presentation. However, Microsoft hasn’t provided a clear reason for the game’s demise.

The fallout from this decision was substantial, affecting around 300 developers and resulting in the exit of studio president Matt Firor.

Public interest around the leak has grown, especially on social media. Many gamers shared their disappointment and curiosity about what could have been. Some even expressed hopes for a revival of the project, highlighting a trend in gaming where canceled titles are sometimes resurrected due to fan demand.

Moreover, according to a recent report by the Entertainment Software Association, around 86% of gamers express a desire for transparency from game developers about project statuses. This leak has certainly fueled those conversations.
