A native of Pittsburgh is emerging as a strong candidate for the next head coach of the Steelers. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Mike McCarthy, who has coached the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, will meet with the Steelers.
McCarthy, 62, has a notable history in the NFL. He spent 13 seasons with the Packers, leading them to a Super Bowl victory in 2011 against the Steelers. After parting ways with the Packers in 2018, he took the reins at Dallas, where he coached for five seasons, making the playoffs three times but only winning once.
Besides his head coaching roles, McCarthy has also worked with teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints in various coaching capacities. His connection to Aaron Rodgers, who reportedly has support from Steelers’ players to return, adds an intriguing layer to his candidacy.
The Steelers are exploring multiple candidates. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mentioned they’ve spoken to several defensive coordinators, including names like Green Bay’s Jeff Hafley and the Chargers’ Jesse Minter. Also on the list are Rams’ Chris Shula and Vikings’ Brian Flores, showing a wide-ranging approach to finding the right fit.
In a recent statement, Steelers President Art Rooney II suggested that none of the current coaches on Mike Tomlin’s staff would be considered for the head coach position. It appears the team is looking for a fresh start.
