This research from Penn State highlights the father’s role without dismissing mothers’ importance. According to lead researcher Alp Aytuglu, both parents impact a child’s environment, but fathers may affect health in ways that stand out more clearly.
Mothers usually take the lead in caregiving, so their behavior often sets the tone. Fathers either support that or create an imbalance, making their actions especially significant in a two-parent household.
It’s generally accepted that kind treatment benefits children, but it’s surprising to see that a father’s behavior can impact health even before a child can remember those moments.

Previous research mostly focused on the mother’s role in parenting and family stability. This study expanded the view, recognizing how familial roles shape children’s health. High-conflict households are linked to various health issues, and this study provides fresh insight into the father’s influence.
“Fathers’ behaviors can shape a child’s environment and health significantly,” says senior author Professor Hannah Schreier. The findings stress that family dynamics affect physical health over time, not just emotional welfare.
