Indian Railways is on an ambitious journey to revamp inter-city travel with the Vande Bharat Express. As of now, 164 of these trains are running across the nation, covering 274 districts and serving over 75 million passengers since their debut in 2019.
These trains are India’s first semi-high-speed models, designed to cut travel time and enhance comfort. Features like self-propelled technology, regenerative braking, automatic doors, and modern air conditioning make a noticeable difference. They also include bio-vacuum toilets and safety systems like KAVACH, India’s Automatic Train Protection system.
Notably, some routes have seen journey times slashed by up to 45%. For instance, the New Delhi–Varanasi route now takes about eight hours. The demand is impressive, with average occupancy exceeding 100% during the years 2024–2025 and into mid-2026.
The Vande Bharat series has evolved, with upgraded models launched in phases. Vande Bharat 2.0, introduced in 2022, has enhanced energy efficiency and greater speed. The latest model, Vande Bharat 3.0, features faster acceleration and advanced onboard systems. Coming soon is the Vande Bharat 4.0, which is currently under development and set to launch in the next 18 months.
In an exciting expansion, Indian Railways plans to introduce the Vande Bharat Sleeper service this month. The inaugural route will be between Howrah and Guwahati, promising to cut travel time by about three hours. This new 16-coach, fully air-conditioned sleeper train has already completed successful trials.
Looking ahead, Indian Railways aims to operate around 800 Vande Bharat trains by 2030 and hopes to scale that number to roughly 4,500 by 2047, depending on infrastructure developments. This initiative is vital in improving rail connectivity while promoting sustainable transportation options.
According to a recent report, the Indian government is investing significantly in railway projects, with spending projected to hit $28 billion in the next financial year to support this initiative. This investment reflects a broader commitment to modernize transport across the nation. The Vande Bharat initiative not only promises faster travel but also aims to boost economic growth by improving access to different states.
