After a successful week, the Grand Canyon University Lopes basketball team is making headlines. Juniors Julianna LaMendola and Ines Zounia shone brightly, with LaMendola being named Mountain West Player of the Week and Zounia earning Freshman of the Week honors.
LaMendola, hailing from Coppell, Texas, delivered an impressive performance. She averaged 15.5 points and 10 rebounds over two games, shooting 52% from the field. Notably, she scored 17 points against Nevada and followed up with a double-double against New Mexico with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Her solid free-throw shooting—8 of 9—has contributed to GCU’s leading free-throw percentage of 76.2% in the Mountain West.
Zounia, from Lille, France, also had a solid week, scoring a total of 28 points across both games, averaging 14 points per game. She recorded eight rebounds and three blocks. Shooting 62% from the field, Zounia made a significant impact, including hitting four 3-pointers against Nevada.
With three straight wins under their belt, the Lopes now look to continue their momentum against Colorado State. Their upcoming game is crucial as they face a top-four rival in the Mountain West.
In the world of sports, teamwork and individual brilliance often lead to great outcomes. Both players’ dedication reflects the team’s overall strength, showcasing the essence of college basketball: hard work pays off.
For those tuning in to GCU’s journey this season, it’s a reminder of how one or two standout players can elevate an entire team, making each game an exciting spectacle.
