Ben Roethlisberger shared some thoughts on his podcast recently about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach search. While the team didn’t ask for his help, he jumped in with his own offseason plan to revive the franchise.
Roethlisberger believes the Steelers should hire an offensive-minded head coach, a shift from their tradition of defensive coaches. “We need someone who can help us score more than just six points in a playoff game,” he said. He suggested bringing in a younger coach who has fresh ideas and energy. He also emphasized the importance of pairing this coach with an experienced defensive coordinator, someone who can lead that side of the ball effectively without immediately wanting to become a head coach themselves.
Looking at potential candidates, he noted that out of nine possible coaches, only three are from offensive backgrounds. Among them are Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase and 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, both of whom are young and could be ready for their first head coaching role. Roethlisberger also mentioned Mike McCarthy, but he doesn’t fit the mold of a rising talent.
With coaching in mind, Roethlisberger turned to the team’s roster. He observed that while some veterans might need to stick around, new coaches might have differing opinions on who should stay. “I think we should keep some of those veteran players to maintain our culture,” he said, recognizing their experience.
He also spoke highly of quarterback Will Howard, a sixth-round pick from 2025, suggesting the team should give him a few years to develop. “We shouldn’t draft a quarterback for at least two to three years,” he argued. The idea is to build a solid team around Howard first. Given the limited quarterback talent in the 2026 draft, it makes sense for the Steelers to focus on strengthening other position groups.
Historically, the Steelers have faced issues with first-round quarterbacks. Roethlisberger pointed out that Kenny Pickett struggled due to a weak offensive line and a lack of support. “We need to protect our next investment better,” he said.
In short, Roethlisberger advocates for a fresh start: modernize the offense, maintain the team culture, build the roster first, and ensure the next quarterback has a strong foundation to succeed.
