WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Big news for the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank! After Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton reached a major settlement with Cal-Maine Foods, one of the state’s largest egg suppliers, the food bank is set to receive over 2 million eggs to help local families.
This settlement stems from a lawsuit Paxton filed in 2020. He accused Cal-Maine of price gouging, raising egg prices by a staggering 300%. As part of the deal, the food bank will receive about 2,000 dozen eggs.
David O’Neal, the CEO of the food bank, was thrilled when he heard the announcement. He explained that eggs are often hard to come by because of their high cost. “This is a blessing for us,” he said. “Protein is always needed, and once we have those eggs, we can quickly distribute them across our 12 counties.”
When asked about the distribution plan, O’Neal mentioned the strong demand for eggs. “We’ve got room for them,” he noted. “But with the demand being so high, they’ll be gone as fast as we can get them in.”
It’s not just a local issue; across the nation, egg prices have been climbing, reflecting broader economic challenges. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, egg prices reached their peak in early 2023, leading many families to make tough choices. For food banks like the one in Wichita Falls, a supply of eggs means a lot.
The food bank is still waiting for details about when to expect the shipment. The settlement stipulates that Cal-Maine should donate the eggs within the next 120 days. This initiative is part of a broader trend where companies are taking steps to correct past pricing issues and provide support to communities in need.
