Jeff Stein has taken on a significant role at Elon University as the chief integration officer and executive vice president. Recently, he spoke with the Triad Business Journal about his responsibilities in the merger process between Elon and Queens University of Charlotte.
Stein’s journey with Elon began back in 2002. Initially, he served as the assistant dean of students and an English professor. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, becoming special assistant to the president and later the chief of staff. Before returning, he led Mary Baldwin University in Virginia as president.
In his interview, Stein emphasized the importance of collaboration between both universities. “Queens and Elon aim to be vital partners for Charlotte,” he stated. He believes that the merger focuses on creating new opportunities for students. Listening to their needs is crucial for shaping this new chapter.
Stein will co-chair the Integration Team alongside Queens President Emerita Pamela Davies. This team will collaborate with both university presidents to ensure regulatory compliance and offer shared services. They will also explore ways to enhance teaching quality, experiential learning, and overall student success.
Interestingly, this merger comes at a time when higher education institutions are increasingly forming partnerships to strengthen their offerings. According to a recent survey by the American Council on Education, nearly 60% of university leaders see mergers or partnerships as key strategies for survival in today’s competitive landscape.
This new direction reflects a broader trend in academia, where institutions are recognizing the benefits of collaboration. As Stein guides this integration, the focus remains firmly on the students and their evolving needs.
