Kensuke Tanabe, a long-time producer at Nintendo, has announced his retirement. He is well-known for his work on the Metroid Prime series and has played a significant role in shaping many beloved games.
In an interview with Nintendo Dream, Tanabe shared that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would be his last project at Nintendo. He mentioned that his protégé, Risa Tabata, will take over if there are more Metroid games in the future. Tabata’s journey started with the original Metroid Prime on GameCube. Her resume includes titles like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Paper Mario: Color Splash.
Tanabe expressed a desire to create a Metroid game focused on Samus and the character Sylux. He hinted at this goal in earlier games. He views Sylux as a complex antagonist—one who uses underhanded tactics. According to Tanabe, the battle between Samus and Sylux is left unfinished. He hopes Tabata and Retro Studios can complete that story in the future.
“My vision for Sylux is that after this game, Samus must confront him directly,” said Tanabe. “It’s a path she cannot avoid.”
Tanabe’s legacy includes directing Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1987. He’s worked on various titles from Luigi’s Mansion to WarioWare. His departure marks the end of an era, and he will be missed by fans and colleagues alike.
