Vikings Secure Future: Brian Flores Stays as Defensive Coordinator with New Contract Extension!

Eagan, Minn. – The Minnesota Vikings have announced that Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores has signed a contract extension.

During Flores’ three seasons with the team (2023-2025), the Vikings have shown significant growth on defense. They allowed an average of 19.2 points per game, the second-lowest in the NFL. In addition, opponents managed just 317.1 total yards per game against the Vikings, including an impressive 105.4 rushing yards per game—the fifth-best in the league. Notably, the Vikings also led in forced fumbles, recording 52, and ranked fifth in total defensive takeaways with 73.

Head Coach Kevin O’Connell praised Flores for his exceptional ability to connect with players and create a strong defensive identity. O’Connell noted, “The relationship we’ve built over the last three years is vital for our success.” This bond has helped shape the team’s approach on the field.

Flores took over a struggling defense ranked 31st overall in 2022. In just two seasons, he elevated them to 16th in 2023 and 2024, then achieved a remarkable third-place finish in 2025, allowing only 282.6 yards per game. The defense also excelled in passing defense, allowing an average of just 158.5 yards per game in 2025, the best since 1989.

In the red zone, the Vikings proved tough to break down, allowing only 2.11 yards per play in 2025. They succeeded in limiting touchdowns to just 42.9% of opponents’ red-zone drives, the second-lowest rate in the NFL.

Flores also led the team to a successful playoff run in 2024, where they boasted a 14-3 record, the second-best in franchise history. During this season, the Vikings topped the league in interceptions and made a record for consecutive games with at least one takeaway, finishing with a total of 24 interceptions. This tied for the second-highest season total since 2000.

Individual accolades followed as well, with three Vikings defenders earning spots in the Pro Bowl in 2025. OLBs Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel, along with CB Byron Murphy Jr., all had standout seasons. Greenard notched 12 sacks, while Murphy tied for the league lead in interceptions. Their achievements highlight the effectiveness of Flores’ coaching approach.

Looking ahead, the Vikings are in a strong position to build on their success. Defensive stats indicate a clear upward trajectory for the team, and Flores’ extension suggests a commitment to maintaining this momentum.
