Sean Payton’s Game Plan: Jarrett Stidham Ready to Shine in AFC Championship Showdown

Jarrett Stidham appeared calm and confident when he spoke to reporters this week. His wet, curly hair peeked out from his Broncos cap, and he answered questions like a seasoned pro.

This Sunday, Denver fans are hoping he brings that same cool demeanor against the New England Patriots.

Stidham, now 29, emphasized his preparation: “Every week, I’ve prepared like I’m the starter. That hasn’t changed.” He understands the pressure, having backed up Russell Wilson before.

A fourth-round pick by the Patriots in 2019, Stidham has been with Las Vegas and now Denver. He last started in Week 18 of the 2023 season when Wilson was benched. Surprisingly, he only played in one game this past season, where he took just four snaps and didn’t throw a pass. His last official throw was back in January.

One advantage for Stidham is that the Patriots likely don’t have much film on him outside of preseason games, where he performed well.

His low profile has its perks. Last week, he even went unnoticed while shopping at Target with his kids.

Stidham has also received strong support from Broncos fans. Many understand that their hopes of reaching the Super Bowl after a decade rest on his shoulders. “I’m off social media now, but I’ve seen the LeBron meme with the headphones and sunglasses,” he said. “I think it’s hilarious. Broncos Country has the best fan base in sports. I can’t wait to perform in front of them.”

If Stidham shines like Nick Foles did when he led the Eagles to Super Bowl LII against the Patriots in 2017, his anonymous days may be over. His teammates recognize the stakes, especially after losing their leader, Nix. “It’s a quick transition,” said Sutton, reflecting on the team’s recent changes. “You feel sad, but we still have a job. Jarrett is capable. He has the skills and football IQ to succeed.”

Stidham has a critical opportunity to show everyone what he can do on a national stage this Sunday. With the right performance, he could change the narrative about his career forever.
