A police chase in San Jose ended tragically on Wednesday. A suspect is dead, and a police sergeant was hospitalized after an intense pursuit across multiple counties.
It all started around 2:37 p.m. when a green Corvette was carjacked in San Jose. Officers located the car and began chasing the suspect.
The chase took the suspect to Hollister, where he abandoned the Corvette. Armed with a gun, he confronted police officers before fleeing and stealing another vehicle.
After this, the suspect returned to Santa Clara County. There, a violent encounter with police ensued in downtown San Jose, leading to a shootout. The suspect was killed, but not before a police sergeant was shot and taken to the hospital. Thankfully, the sergeant is currently in stable but critical condition.
This incident has raised concerns about public safety. According to recent data from the FBI, carjackings have surged by 20% nationwide over the past year, prompting cities like San Jose to reassess their policing strategies. Experts suggest that an increased focus on community engagement could be one way to effectively address such crimes.
Highway 87 at Julian Street is closed in both directions due to the ongoing police activity, and it’s unclear when it will reopen.
