Wheeling, W. Va.—The Wheeling Women’s Basketball team approached their game against the Salem Tigers with a fresh mindset, treating it like a new season. This attitude helped them secure a solid 60-46 victory. Layla Merriweather led the team with 20 points, while Emma Reynolds achieved a career-high with 11 rebounds. Overall, the team made 42.6% of their shots from the field.
The game started with the Tigers scoring first, but Wheeling quickly responded. Graci Fairman hit a jumper, sparking a run that took the lead to 9-2. Although Salem managed to tie the game at 11, another three-pointer from Fairman put Wheeling back in front, ending the first quarter 14-13.
In the second quarter, Emilia Sierra Lacosta opened the scoring, followed by Dalton’s jumper, giving Wheeling an 18-13 lead. Merriweather then took charge, scoring the next seven points. By halftime, the Cardinals held a significant advantage at 31-21.
The second half began with a steal by Dalton, allowing Merriweather to extend Wheeling’s lead to 35-21. Salem tried to close the gap, but Wheeling’s defense remained strong, limiting high-percentage shots. Dalton’s impressive drive led to a three-point play, stretching the lead to 45-32 by the end of the third.
As the final quarter commenced, Merriweather’s early shot kept the momentum going. The Cardinals continued to pull away, reaching a 20-point lead at one point. Although the Tigers finished strong, Wheeling’s victory was secure.
Merriweather finished the game with a high of 20 points, supported by Dalton’s 15 points, six steals, and six rebounds. Fairman added nine points, while Reynolds and Lacosta each contributed six.
This win puts Wheeling Women’s Basketball in good spirits as they prepare to face West Liberty University on January 24, 2026.
