Exciting news for soul food lovers in Cedar Rapids! A new restaurant called Fork and Sports is set to open in downtown, specifically at 209 3rd Street SE. This spot previously housed Taco Gato, which closed in November 2024.
Fork and Sports is the brainchild of Vaosa O’Meara, who revived Harold’s Chicken in 2025. She aims to bring back beloved soul food dishes that local residents missed after the closure of places like Vivian’s Soul Food in 2022 and Jamaican Pat’s Caribbean Kitchen last year.
So, what can you expect on the menu? Diners can look forward to a variety of fried and baked dishes, including pot roast, smothered pork chops, and both baked and fried chicken. Sides will include classic offerings like collard greens, cornbread, and macaroni and cheese. O’Meara plans to feature weekly specials, making each visit unique.
As for when you can enjoy this delicious fare, Fork and Sports aims to open its doors by late February or early March. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner, with plans for late-night service on weekends.
In recent months, there’s been a surge of interest in soul food across the U.S. According to a survey by the National Restaurant Association, 25% of Americans highlighted soul food as a top cuisine they want to try. This reflects a growing appreciation for diverse culinary traditions, particularly among younger diners. Social media trends show many foodies sharing their favorite soul food dishes, contributing to the renewed excitement.
In short, Fork and Sports is all set to enrich the Cedar Rapids dining scene, offering a taste of comfort and tradition that many have been looking for.
