The Greenland shark might look like a tired old sock, but it’s far from ordinary. These slow-moving creatures swim through the icy Arctic waters, often dismissed as clumsy and nearly blind. However, recent research turns this view on its head.
In January, scientists revealed that these sharks can actually see. This discovery challenges what researchers thought they knew and highlights the difficulty of studying this elusive species. Jena Edwards, a marine ecologist from Canada, emphasizes the mystery surrounding Greenland sharks: “Even the things that we think we know, we’re still a little bit unsure about.”
Greenland sharks can grow up to 20 feet long. Though they seem lethargic, their diets tell a different story. Inside their stomachs, researchers have found remains of caribou, polar bears, and even narwhals. This suggests they do more than just scavenge.

Hussey recalls his own experiences studying them. In a submersible off Norway’s coast, he saw Greenland sharks moving gracefully between the surface and the ocean floor, showing they have a greater range of movement than we realized.
Previously, a study estimated some Greenland sharks might have lived through significant historical periods, like the time of Shakespeare or Galileo. However, Hussey cautions against relying solely on carbon dating for aging them, as it has limitations with shorter timeframes and may not paint a complete picture.
Interestingly, these sharks are often found in shallow waters, contrary to the idea that they dwell only in the deep. Recent headlines about them swimming in Caribbean waters suggest they might be more widespread than we think, possibly traveling vast distances in their lifetimes.
As the Arctic warms due to climate change, questions arise about how the Greenland shark will adapt. Hussey notes they are generalists capable of changing their diet. Yet, an area of concern is their reproduction. The last observed pregnant female was noted in 1950, and we still don’t know where they give birth or how many pups they have.
Hussey warns that assumptions about the sharks being mere scavengers might be misleading. Inuit hunters’ oral histories hint at a more complex predatory behavior, suggesting they could ambush prey in shallow waters. “How have they survived for so long?” he asks, pondering the possibilities of uncovering further mysteries about these fascinating creatures.
