Ohio Wesleyan University recently celebrated its staff during a special event called “SHINE and Celebrate.” This lively day honored two standout employees and recognized 73 others for their years of service. The ceremony was filled with laughter, stories, and a spirit of community.
President Matt vandenBerg revealed the winners of the prestigious awards. He also announced a new initiative called the Bishop Day of Service. Now, all faculty and staff who have worked at the university for at least six months can take a paid day off each year to volunteer in the community. VandenBerg humorously linked the day’s theme to words starting with “S,” celebrating the spirit of dedication among the staff.
Shining Stars of the Year
Deb Lovell, an academic assistant, received the 2025 SPARK Award. This award recognizes staff with five years or less of service who positively impact the university. Lovell, who joined in 2023, was nominated by eight colleagues who highlighted her willingness to support others and her leadership among student workers. Her co-worker Vanessa Hildebrand praised her, stating, “In a very short period, Deb has made an indelible impact at OWU.”
On the other hand, Doug Koyle, the associate dean for student success, won the 2025 STAR Award. This award honors employees known for going above and beyond in their roles. Koyle, a staff member since 2018, was recognized for his calm demeanor and unwavering commitment to helping students in crisis. Vice President Dwayne Todd noted Koyle’s humble approach and his genuine care for students’ well-being.
These awards not only shine a light on individual accomplishments but also reflect Ohio Wesleyan’s culture of support and engagement.
Recognizing Service Milestones
Besides honoring award winners, the event acknowledged milestone anniversaries of staff members. Celebrating service years is crucial. It builds a sense of belonging and unity within the university community. For example, many staff members received recognition for five, ten, or even twenty years of service, emphasizing their dedication to students and the institution.
According to a recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employee recognition plays a vital role in job satisfaction and retention. Institutions that celebrate their staff often see higher morale and engagement levels, which in turn enhances the student experience.
In today’s fast-paced world, moments like these remind us of the importance of community. Events like “SHINE and Celebrate” encourage connection, gratitude, and a strong sense of belonging. Through recognizing both contributions and milestones, Ohio Wesleyan fosters an environment where everyone feels valued.
