Kentucky’s First Lifestyle Medicine Clinic: ARH Celebrates Grand Opening!

Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) recently launched its first lifestyle medicine clinic in Hazard, Kentucky. This new clinic aims to tackle the rising rates of chronic diseases in the region by focusing on preventive care.

Nika Larian, ARH’s vice president of wellness, emphasized the clinic’s commitment to improving health in rural communities. “In Appalachia, we face significant health challenges,” she said, noting that many residents struggle with limited access to preventive care.

The clinic, led by nurse practitioner Allie Davidson, emphasizes a holistic approach to health. Davidson described lifestyle medicine as focusing on the “whole person.” This type of care revolves around six key pillars: nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, avoiding risky substances, and maintaining positive social connections.

Patient feedback has been encouraging. Many individuals are setting personal health goals. One patient expressed a desire to stay active for his four grandchildren, highlighting how personalized health care can inspire change.

Currently, the Hazard clinic is piloting this approach, with plans to expand services throughout the region. Larian stated, “We’re applying evidence-based principles in a clinical setting,” confirming that this initiative is grounded in research.

A recent survey from the National Institute of Health shows that lifestyle interventions can significantly reduce chronic disease rates. This further underscores the importance of the clinic’s mission.

Lifestyle medicine isn’t just a trend; it represents a shift toward thinking about health in a more comprehensive way. With the clinic now accepting new patients, it’s clear that ARH is dedicated to making a positive impact on the health of its community.
