On February 25, 2026, Pepperdine University’s Seaver College will kick off its first-ever Oncology Symposium in Malibu. This event brings together top experts, doctors, researchers, and students to dive into the latest in cancer therapy.
Dee Anna Smith, chair of the Pepperdine Board of Regents, expressed excitement about the event. “This symposium shows our dedication to science and collaboration,” she said. The goal is to enhance learning and improve care for patients and their families.
The symposium will start with a keynote speech from Julie Gralow, chief medical officer for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). She plays a crucial role in shaping cancer care and aims to better the lives of those affected by the disease.
Following Gralow, cancer survivor Teri Pollastro will share her personal journey, emphasizing how innovation in cancer treatment can change lives.
Afterward, a panel of leaders in drug development will discuss current and future treatments. The panel includes notable figures like Sara Hurvitz from the University of Washington and Shahryar Ashouri from UCLA. They will share insights from ongoing research efforts around the globe.
Madison Johnson, a senior at Seaver College and one of the organizers, hopes the audience feels inspired. “I want students interested in oncology to learn about the paths of the speakers and be motivated to pursue similar careers,” she remarked.
Johnson has a background in cancer research, inspired by her experiences at the German Cancer Research Center and Sarah Cannon Research Institute. She believes it’s essential for undergraduates to present their findings, giving them a chance to share their work with a wider audience.
“This event aims to communicate science simply, so everyone can understand what’s happening in oncology,” she added.
The symposium also focuses on engaging undergraduate students, aligning with Pepperdine’s mission to nurture purpose-driven leaders. Tim Lucas, divisional dean of natural science at Seaver College, noted that he hopes the event will encourage more students to get involved in oncology research and further their education in this important field.
This event is free and open to the public, making cutting-edge cancer research accessible to everyone. The hope is that it fuels more interest and involvement in the battle against cancer.
