PALO ALTO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Volleyball Team faced a tough challenge against No. 14 Stanford in a thrilling match that went the distance. Despite standout performances from several players, the Gauchos fell short in a nail-biting fifth set.
Match Overview
The action started with the Gauchos taking the first set 25-22. They kept it close, trading points with Stanford, and finally took the lead after a series of ties. This strong start set the tone for the night.
However, Stanford quickly rebounded in the second set, also winning 25-22. Both teams were neck-and-neck, tied 11 times. Stanford pushed ahead at the end to even the score.
The Gauchos bounced back impressively in the third set, dominating 25-18. They maintained a solid lead throughout, pulling away to secure their two-set advantage.
Yet, Stanford wasn’t done. In the fourth set, they fought back, edging out the Gauchos 25-21. The intensity built, with both teams exchanging momentum.
Going into the fifth and final set, the tension was palpable. The Gauchos briefly led but Stanford tied it at 10-10, resulting in a back-and-forth battle. In a dramatic finish, Stanford clinched the match with a final score of 17-15.
During the match, Riggs Guy shone offensively, leading with a season-high of 15 kills. Ben Pearson and Cole Schobel also had career nights, with 13 and 9 kills respectively. George Bruening contributed significantly with 8 blocks.
Defensively, Schobel achieved his first double-digit dig count of the season, recording 15 digs. Guy added 9 digs of his own, while Pearson and Wallace managed 8 each. Meanwhile, Dylan Pilkvist had a strong showing with 5 digs, marking a personal best.
The Gauchos aim to rebound in their rematch against Stanford on January 23rd at 6:00 p.m. Can they come out stronger this time? Only time will tell.
