Oaken Pool hails from central Arkansas, but he feels a strong connection to the ocean. Growing up, his friends nicknamed him “Surfer Boy.” That nickname took on new meaning when he had the chance to study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in fall 2025 through Arkansas Tech University’s National Student Exchange program.
“I’ve always dreamed of hitting the beach and learning to surf,” Oaken shared. Before discovering the NSE program, attending the University of Hawaii seemed financially out of reach due to high out-of-state tuition. But the NSE offered a perfect chance to explore his dreams while studying at a prestigious business school known for its international connections.
Oaken graduated as the salutatorian from Maumelle Charter High School in 2023 and had engaged with advanced programs through initiatives like the Arkansas Governor’s School. Now at Arkansas Tech, he’s been frequently recognized on the President’s and Dean’s Lists for his outstanding academic performance. He’s also active in the ATU Honors Program, which further emphasizes his dedication to academic excellence.
Studying in Hawaii allowed Oaken to explore the rich tapestry of Hawaiian history and culture while providing valuable academic skills. “I learned vital business skills, such as analyzing market trends and constructing business operations. I also gained culture-rich experiences, learning about diverse communities,” he noted. These experiences are pivotal as he steps into a future career in business.
For students considering study abroad or study away, Oaken has valuable advice. “Be respectful of local customs, stay connected with family and friends, and budget realistically for the higher cost of living—especially in places like Hawaii.” He encourages students to pursue these opportunities without hesitation. “The NSE program was life-changing for me. It helped me experience a piece of my dream and taught me real-world skills.”
Oaken’s journey is more than just a personal triumph; it reflects a growing trend among students seeking immersive educational experiences worldwide. According to a 2023 NAFSA report, U.S. students studying abroad has been steadily increasing, with a 7% rise in the last year. Participating in global programs not only enriches personal experiences but also enhances cultural competence—skills that modern employers value highly.
