Residents of Lackawanna and Wayne County earning $67,000 or less in 2025 can get free help with their tax returns from University of Scranton accounting students. This service is part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which has supported low to moderate-income households for over 30 years.
Starting February 4 and running until April 8, students will offer walk-in assistance at Brennan Hall on campus. This is a first-come, first-served service; no appointments are necessary at the University. Just stop by during the scheduled hours.

To qualify for VITA assistance, residents should bring the following items:
- A valid photo ID
- Social Security cards for everyone listed on the tax return
- All W-2 and 1099 forms
- Previous year’s tax returns
- Documents related to income and expenses
- Health insurance information, such as Form 1095
- Real estate tax receipts if eligible for rent or tax rebates
VITA service at the University is available in Room 111 of Brennan Hall. Hours are:
- Mondays: 9 AM – 3 PM
- Tuesdays: 12 PM – 5 PM
- Wednesdays: 9 AM – 3 PM
- Fridays: 9 AM – 1 PM
Note that the service will pause during the University’s Spring Break, from March 16-20, and may close on days with severe weather.
