Jacob Finley, a senior at the University of Notre Dame, has just been named a 2026 Churchill Scholar. Out of nearly 160 applicants, he is one of only 16 selected. This marks Notre Dame’s fifth Churchill Scholar and the second in three years.
Finley, who studies physics-in-medicine, is deeply invested in radiation oncology research. His interest stems from the experiences of family members and hospice patients undergoing cancer treatments. Next year, he plans to pursue a Master of Philosophy in pathology at the University of Cambridge, working under David Fernandez-Antoran in the School of Biological Sciences.
“I feel blessed and humbled to receive this scholarship,” Finley said. “I aim to continue Notre Dame’s mission to be a ‘force for good’ by improving cancer treatments for those in need.”
His research involvement is impressive. He works with Professor Sylwia Ptasinska at the Ptasinska Research Laboratory, focusing on radiation. Previously, he held positions as a CPRIT CURE fellow at MD Anderson Cancer Center and an Amgen Fellow at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
Finley is not just a researcher; he holds several leadership roles on campus. He is the associate news editor for Scientia, president of the Quiz Bowl Club, and a member of both the College of Science Council and the Honor Code Committee.
In his spare time, he volunteers for Heartland Hospice and Saint Joseph Mishawaka Medical Center. Extensive shadowing in various medical specialties has further solidified his commitment to cancer care.
Finley credits his family and mentors for his success. “This scholarship wouldn’t be possible without their support,” he acknowledged. He especially thanked his professors for inspiring his love of science and helping him acquire the skills necessary to make real change.
In the past few years, the Churchill Scholarship has been a beacon for future leaders in science, technology, and policy. Established in 1963, it aims to strengthen U.S.-U.K. partnerships while fostering advancements in various fields. The scholarship covers tuition, travel, and provides a stipend.
Notably, recipients can also apply for a special research grant, making it one of the most prestigious international fellowships available to American graduate students. Eight previous Churchill Scholars have won Nobel Prizes, reflecting the program’s high standards and its significant impact.
