The end of January often feels like a fresh start. For many, it’s a time for new resolutions, like embarking on a fitness journey or trying a different lifestyle. One popular initiative is Veganuary, a 31-day challenge to embrace a vegan lifestyle.
This year, a YouGov poll predicted that one in ten adults in the UK would join Veganuary. According to Jane Land, co-founder of the campaign, interest in vegan food has never been stronger. “It used to be hard to find vegan options in restaurants,” she said. “Now, it’s a mainstream choice.”
Land noted that about one-third of Veganuary participants turn vegan after the month ends, while others incorporate more plant-based meals into their diets.
In North Yorkshire, some local businesses have noticed this shift. For example, Beck Hall, a plant-based hotel at Malham Cove, has been thriving since its complete transition to a vegan menu. Co-owner Andrew Macbeth indicated they worried about losing customers but found quite the opposite: “It’s been really successful,” he noted. Guests have praised the flavors and creativity of plant-based dishes. Macbeth believes Veganuary helps to spark change, even if it doesn’t directly drive a surge in bookings.
Meanwhile, Ruth Richards, who owns a vintage plant-based tearoom in York, takes a different approach. Although most of her customers are not vegan, she sees her café as a platform for “low-level activism.” Many visitors come for the ambiance and end up trying vegan options, some even switching to oat milk after tasting it.
Interestingly, some people, like tourists Talia and Courtney, are open to the challenge, despite being unfamiliar with Veganuary. They often eat vegetarian meals but wonder about the effort required to fully commit to a vegan diet. Talia believes she could do a month, while Courtney raises concerns about protein sourcing.
In a recent survey by the Vegan Society, nearly 25% of people reported trying a plant-based diet in the past year, illustrating the growing popularity of veganism. With increasing awareness and accessibility, many are willing to explore this lifestyle change, even if just for January.
As people attempt to navigate their dietary choices, Veganuary serves as a helpful introduction. Whether participants stick with it or not, many are gaining a newfound appreciation for plant-based meals. This month could be just the starting point for a more sustainable future.
