PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — At the Sundance Film Festival, filmmakers and actors paid tribute to Robert Redford, a pioneer of independent cinema who passed away recently. This year’s festival, the last in Utah before it moves to Boulder, Colorado, is a heartfelt nod to Redford’s vision—a supportive space for stories that don’t fit the traditional mold.
Redford’s daughter, Amy, shared that he didn’t see filmmaking as making an empire but as creating a nurturing environment. She emphasized the importance of the Sundance Institute’s lab programs that help writers and directors grow their talents, keeping his spirit alive even as the festival relocates.
The Sundance labs, launched in 1981, invite rising storytellers to the serene surroundings of northern Utah, away from Hollywood’s noise. Notably, three of this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Director—Paul Thomas Anderson, Chloé Zhao, and Ryan Coogler—emerged from these labs.
Chloé Zhao, whose film “Hamnet” received eight Oscar nominations, credited the screenwriting lab with kickstarting her career. There, she gained confidence and built a supportive network of creatives.
Nia DaCosta, another lab alum, fondly recalled Redford’s warmth. He often rode his motorcycle on the trails and made time to discuss projects with aspiring filmmakers, insisting they call him “Bob.” Her admiration for him was clear, as she noted how deeply he cared for the creative community he fostered.
Actor Ethan Hawke shared a memorable audition experience from 1992. Although Redford felt Hawke was too young for the role in “A River Runs Through It,” he recognized his potential and became a significant mentor. Hawke committed to continuing Redford’s legacy and helping the creative fire he ignited to thrive.
At this year’s festival, a video tribute to Redford received loud applause, and many volunteers wore buttons saying “Thank you, Bob!” One notable screening will showcase his first independent film, the 1969 sports drama “Downhill Racer.”
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay credited Redford with modeling a way of being that emphasized the importance of artists and imagination. From her early days as a publicist to becoming a celebrated director, she highlighted that his influence is still felt and that the doors he opened are for others to walk through.
“I never felt right calling him Bob,” she said, adding, “Mr. Redford established more than a festival; he established a mindset.”
As the festival continues, the legacy of Robert Redford endures. His commitment to nurturing creativity sets a standard for future generations in the film industry.
