Chicago’s Deep Freeze: A Storm is Coming
Chicago is experiencing some seriously cold weather. With temperatures dipping to between -3 and -11 degrees, wind chills are making it feel like -20 to -25. A Cold Weather Advisory is in place until noon Saturday.
Later today, temperatures should rise above zero. But, there’s snow on the way—up to 6 inches could fall from Saturday evening into Sunday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory will kick in tonight, warning of slippery roads.
Counties like Cook, Lake, and DuPage will see the advisory from 6 p.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday. Near Lake Michigan, snow totals may sharply vary; just a few miles inland could see much less precipitation.
Expert meteorologist Jaisol Martinez explained that the lake effect will play a big role in these totals. While some areas near the lake could receive heavy snow, a short distance away, it might barely stick.
Still, it’s essential to stay cautious. The snowy conditions could lead to dangerous driving on Saturday night and Sunday.
Travelers should also be aware that the winter storm has caused major disruptions across the nation. Over 8,000 flights have been canceled this weekend, with nearly 200 at O’Hare alone. States from New Mexico to the Northeast are declaring states of emergency. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is coordinating with airlines to manage the impact and prepare for recovery efforts.
