Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto landed in New Delhi on Thursday night for his first official visit to India as president. He will be the chief guest at the 76th Republic Day celebrations.
Upon arrival, Subianto was welcomed by India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita. The External Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson shared on social media that this visit is a chance to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Indonesia and India.
During his four-day trip, Subianto will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss several important topics. Key points of discussion include food and energy security, healthcare, and renewable energy. They are also likely to explore agreements on cultural exchanges, digital mapping for agriculture, and enhancing flight connections, especially the potential Delhi-Jakarta route.
This visit holds special significance. For the first time, a 352-member Indonesian marching band will participate in the Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path, New Delhi. Brigadier Kristomei, a senior Indonesian military officer, expressed pride in showcasing their contingent to the Indian government and people.
Indonesia is one of India’s main trading partners in the ASEAN region, with trade reaching $29.4 billion in 2023. Indian investments in Indonesia cover areas like infrastructure, textiles, and banking, totaling $1.56 billion.
Defence cooperation is fundamental to their partnership. A Defence Cooperation Agreement established in 2018 has strengthened security ties, and discussions regarding technology transfers and improvements to Indonesia’s defence systems are anticipated during Subianto’s visit.
This visit continues a longstanding tradition of strong ties between the two nations. Notably, Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president, was the guest of honor at India’s first Republic Day in 1950.
