Brown Women’s Tennis: A Strong Start to Spring Season
The Brown women’s tennis team kicked off their spring season with a thrilling 4-3 victory against the University of Portland. This match took place at the Pizzitola Sports Center and set a positive tone for the Bears.
Coach Lucie Schmidhauser praised her team for their effort against a tough Portland squad. “It was a gritty win against a quality team. We had to fight hard to match their energy,” she said.
In doubles, Brown started strong with Hannah Shen and Dani Ben-Abraham scoring a quick victory, 6-2. However, they lost the other two matches, allowing Portland to take the doubles point.
“In doubles, Dani and Hannah played aggressively. They didn’t give their opponents any chances,” Coach Schmidhauser noted.
During singles play, the tension heightened. Ali Maguy faced a challenging opponent, dropping her match 7-5, 6-2. But Hannah Shen responded with an impressive performance, winning 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Abigail Lee and Sari Woo added more points for Brown with solid wins, while Dani Ben-Abraham and Anne Yang also delivered strong performances.
In the end, it was a close battle, but Brown clinched victory thanks to Hannah’s perseverance in the final set. Coach Schmidhauser described her play as “gutsy” and highlighted the emotional swings throughout the match.
Looking forward, the Bears are set to host the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays on January 31, a match that promises to keep the energy high.
