Utah police arrested a man named Christian Young after he allegedly assaulted Rep. Maxwell Frost during the Sundance Film Festival. Frost, a young Democratic congressman from Florida, shared that the man yelled about deportation and then punched him in the face.
According to the Park City Police Department, Young had been denied entry to a private party but managed to get inside. He not only attacked Frost but also assaulted a woman attending the event. He now faces charges of aggravated burglary and simple assault.
Frost tweeted about the incident, expressing gratitude for the support he received from venue security and local police. He described the suspect’s behavior as drunken and laced with racist remarks. “He was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off,” he said.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the attack, calling for strict legal action against Young. He emphasized that hate and political violence have no place in the country and assured support for Frost.
Since being elected in 2022, Frost has been vocal about issues like voting rights and gun control. His election marked a significant milestone as he is the first member of Generation Z to serve in Congress.
This incident is part of a troubling trend. Recent political violence has raised concerns about the safety of public figures. The U.S. Capitol Police are taking additional measures, following several high-profile attacks, including a tragic case last June when Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in their home.
