Two former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coaches are now leading defenses in the NFC East.
Mike Wilson coached the Eagles in 2022 but was not chosen for the defensive coordinator position after Jonathan Gannon left for the Arizona Cardinals. This shift led to a series of changes, resulting in Wilson being let go by head coach Nick Sirianni. He was replaced by Sean Desai, who later faced a rough season.
The Eagles eventually secured Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator, which turned out positive for them.
After his time in Philadelphia, Wilson found a new opportunity as the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator, following a strong tenure as the Ravens’ defensive backs coach. Interestingly, his unit showed a strange trend—ranking second in yards but falling to 30th in 2024, before finishing 21st and then 28th in the next two seasons.
Evaluating Wilson’s time in Tennessee reveals he didn’t have much to work with. Despite his previous successes, the Titans faced numerous challenges. However, this experience sets him up well for a chance with the Giants. If he excels, it could open doors for him as a head coaching candidate.
Fans of the Eagles might feel mixed emotions. It’s great to see former coaches succeed, but there’s a worry about their achievements impacting the Eagles’ chances. Ideally, they would have liked to see these coaches land roles in a different division.
As the NFL landscape changes, keeping an eye on these coaching moves is crucial. Teams must adapt just as players do.
