In Leamington Spa, a new health initiative called “nature prescriptions” is changing lives. Doctors at the Croft Medical Centre have introduced this program to help patients improve their physical and mental well-being.

The idea is simple: get outside, breathe fresh air, and take walks. Dr. Jo Fleming, a health and well-being coach at the center, leads a weekly walk for patients. She believes connecting with nature is vital for health, not just because of the physical activity, but also due to the social benefits. Steve Moody, one of the participants, noted that he feels “happier and fitter” since he started attending these walks with his dog, Poppy. Initially, only one person attended, but now around ten patients join each week, showing the growing interest in this simple yet effective plan.

Launched in 2022 by the RSPB and the West Midlands Combined Authority, nature prescriptions follow the success of similar projects across the UK. They aim to encourage more people to step outside and engage with nature.

Nature prescriptions reflect this trend, putting health in the hands of patients through enjoyable outdoor activities.

At the Croft Medical Centre, Sney Gohil, a social prescriber, emphasizes that the program is patient-led. Moody, who was directed to the nature prescription after a health course, feels it has greatly improved his mental health. “It’s difficult to quantify, but I’m definitely doing more miles each week,” he said, expressing the positive impact on him and his dog.
