GOJO Industries Achieves Validation of Climate Goals by the Science-Based Targets Initiative: A Commitment to a Sustainable Future

GOJO, makers of PURELL™, is stepping up its sustainability efforts.

On January 23, 2025, in Akron, Ohio, GOJO announced that its climate targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation is a significant milestone in their mission to promote healthy skin and effective hand hygiene.

The SBTi provides companies with a structured approach to set and validate climate targets. Its goal is to help businesses achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions before 2050 and support the global aim of limiting warming to 1.5 °C as per the Paris Agreement.

Stephanie Schneider, GOJO’s Chief Product Officer, shared, “For over 75 years, we’ve focused on innovation to solve genuine problems. This validation shows our commitment to social, environmental, and economic value.”

GOJO’s Commitments:

  • Near-Term Goals (by 2030): GOJO aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 42% from 2022 levels. They also plan to switch to 100% renewable electricity and reduce emissions per thousand cases shipped by about 51.6%.
  • Long-Term Goals (by 2050): The company aims to decrease total emissions by 90% and by 97% per thousand cases shipped.
  • Net-Zero Target: GOJO is committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.

This validation aligns with GOJO’s long history of sustainability. Founded in 1946 by Goldie and Jerry Lippman, the company began by innovating safer hand-cleaning methods. Their commitment to sustainability began early, using recycled materials for their first dispensers.

In 2006, GOJO launched its first green hand cleaner, and since then, it has set ambitious sustainability goals, achieving many ahead of schedule. Their latest goals, set in 2023, aim to align with their commitment to well-being solutions, or as they say, “Saving Lives and Making Life Better.”

GOJO continues to be a leader in hand hygiene, and its dedication to sustainability only strengthens its mission. With support from initiatives like SBTi, the company is not just improving its products but also the world around us.
