Driving Restrictions in Delaware Due to Winter Weather
Recently, Governor Matthew Meyer announced a Level 2 Driving Restriction for New Castle and Kent Counties in Delaware. This will take effect at 10:00 a.m. The goal is to keep emergency responders and essential services safe while minimizing unnecessary travel during severe weather and hazardous road conditions.
Here’s what you should know about the Level 2 restriction:
- Operating a vehicle is not allowed unless you are essential personnel. This includes snow removal workers or those approved under the Delaware Emergency Management Agency’s waiver program.
- Level 1 restrictions remain in effect for Sussex County, meaning residents should still exercise caution while on the road.
Additionally, Code Purple Shelters are open 24/7 statewide. These shelters offer a warm refuge, meals, and resources during extreme winter weather. You can find shelter contacts below:
- New Castle County: 302-652-8033
- Kent County: 1-800-733-6816
- Sussex County: 302-519-0024
- Or call 211 for immediate assistance.

Winter can bring dangerous conditions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, winter weather contributes to more than 20% of car accidents annually. This highlights the importance of following driving restrictions and staying informed. Remember to check in on your neighbors, especially the elderly, and offer help if they need it.
Stay safe and warm this winter!
