Studying abroad is a life-changing adventure for many, but for Emmanuel Agbagba, it felt familiar. Coming from Accra, Ghana, he chose East Tennessee State University (ETSU) to pursue his passion for counseling.
After completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Ghana, Agbagba researched various schools online and found ETSU. “I liked the peaceful atmosphere and the solid counseling program here,” he explained. He was driven by his desire to support children and teens.
Once he arrived in Johnson City, Agbagba jumped right into campus life. He took counseling classes, collaborated with classmates and professors, and even became president of several clubs, including the National Society of Leadership and Success and the Shades of Africa. His time at ETSU has been busy and fulfilling.
“Being an international student has been both challenging and rewarding,” he shared. Adjusting to a new culture and academic system tested his resilience but ultimately made him stronger.
In May 2025, Agbagba returned to Ghana on a study abroad trip with the Center for Global Engagement. This time, he played an essential role, helping his peers understand local culture as they visited schools and landmarks. “It was powerful to see my home country through new eyes,” he noted. This experience highlighted the importance of intercultural learning.
Agbagba is already applying lessons from this trip to campus life. He understands that effective counseling is rooted in cultural respect. “Creating inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity is crucial,” he said. He aims to incorporate these values into his future career as a school counselor, ensuring that every student feels valued.
ETSU promotes hands-on learning through various opportunities, from studying abroad to internships and research. A recent survey showed that 80% of students who participated in international programs felt better prepared for their careers, underscoring the value of these experiences.
Overall, Emmanuel Agbagba’s story is a testament to how studying abroad can broaden perspectives and build essential skills for the future. His journey encourages others to embrace new experiences, no matter the challenges.
